Warm Internet fuzzies
There are a few companies and Web sites that give me the warm fuzzies. Instead of drowning everything they say in text that's engineered to project authority and slickness, sites like Flickr, A List Apart and PhotoJojo have copy that's so simple, clear and effortlessly fun that they almost have their own personalities.

But nothing beats the freaks at CD Baby:

Your CD has been gently taken from our CD Baby shelves with sterilized contamination-free gloves and placed onto a satin pillow.

A team of 50 employees inspected your CD and polished it to make sure it was in the best possible condition before mailing.

Our packing specialist from Japan lit a candle and a hush fell over the crowd as he put your CD into the finest gold-lined box that money can buy.

We all had a wonderful celebration afterwards and the whole party marched down the street to the post office where the entire town of Portland waved "Bon Voyage!" to your package, on its way to you, in our private CD Baby jet on this day, Thursday, December 6th.

I hope you had a wonderful time shopping at CD Baby. We sure did. Your picture is on our wall as "Customer of the Year." We're all exhausted but can't wait for you to come back to CDBABY.COM!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Sigh...

Gawd, I love those guys.

Is it just me, or is this bordering on snarky? It's just so over the top, it's hard not to read it as sarcastic. I guess I'd still rather buy a cd from another snarky asshole like myself than from a soulless drone at, say, Virgin Megastore.

I dunno -- the president of CD Baby, Derek Sivers, writes like that, and all the stuff he's written about promoting your music is in this style. For example:

7. Have fun - do NOT be corporate

Never use corporate marketing-speak.
Be weird.
Be a real person.
Sound like one person speaking to one person.
This is a big reason why it's COOL to be indie instead of corporate. Real people respond better to the weird fun stuff.

I think he is kinda over the top. That's why I like him!
